Language Assessment for Cruise Industry
CTI Hire is the cruise industry’s first department-specific English assessment. This innovative mobile application guides our fast-track program selection process. Program applicants show their language ability through the completion of this timed assessment. Before taking the assessment, users can practice each question type. Questions target communication skills in the hospitality and maritime sectors. Thus, an applicant’s score determines their admission into the fast-track hospitality program.
The assessment is available as a mobile app for all Android and IOS devices. Using voice biometrics, it tests students’ ability to speak, read, and understand English. It then scores applicants using the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). CEFR is the international standard for describing language ability. Assessment modules designed for shipboard positions benchmark the necessary level of English. Indeed, certain positions demand high-level communication abilities. To that end, the assessment is relevant to many areas within the hospitality industry.
The management team coordinates the testing process based on the applicant’s desired position. Assessment modules are now available for the following divisions:

• Deck & Engine
• Entry Level F&B
• Food Service
Following admission to the program, students must take the assessment twice more. Once halfway through the program and again following its completion. This ensures that learning has taken place. Moreover, it tells us that the student is ready for a hospitality career on board a cruise ship.
